St. Radbertus, an abbot in the 8th century during the time of the Carolingian dynasty, wrote the first known treatise on the presence of Christ in the Eucharist. After further development, the essential part of his thought was to become official church teaching. The Eucharist is not a mere symbol of Christ's presence, but truly Christ present with us.
